5 Ideas to Welcome Employees Back to the Office

Published:June 23, 2022

Back in the office full-time. Hybrid. Flexible. Half remote, half in person. Up to the employees. Up to the employers. However you are welcoming your team back to the office, make it a memorable experience that is kind, compassionate, and understanding. Here are a few ideas from our very own HR experts here at Humani:

1. Personalize 'Welcome Back to the Office' packages

Similar to a care package, celebrate the return to the collaborative workspace with a small gift or a personalized package welcoming each employee back. Think a gift card to a local coffee shop near the office, their favourite Costco snacks, or even lunch on the company. While small, this gesture goes a long way in making employees feel supported, celebrated and welcomed back to an environment they haven't been in for more than 2 years. After all, our talent is our everything, especially now, so extra appreciation is always a good idea.

2. Support social interaction between employees in the office

Employees are likely looking forward to reconnecting with colleagues in person after long periods spent in isolation. Empower employees to feel like they can pop by someone's desk for a chat and a catch-up. Social interaction will energize your team, highlight the importance of in-person work, and help renew workplace culture. And we all know that the best talks happen by the water cooler so encourage this special type of bonding!

3. Reassure employees that flex work is here to stay

While some employees may be enthusiastic about the return to work, others may not be. It's important to reassure all staff that the flexibility they've come to enjoy during the pandemic isn't going away. Reinforce policies around hybrid work arrangements set by your organization and welcome questions and discussion around the subject. Whether it’s childcare, medical appointments, or mental health days off, letting your employees take control of where they work and how goes a long way.

4. Review health and safety protocols in the office to keep everyone comfortable

Off the back of a pandemic, it's imperative that employers still show consideration to those employees who may be hesitant to return to the office out of concern for their health or the health of their family members. Reinforce the protocols expected of all employees, and consider approaching concerned individuals to help build tailored plans that suit their needs.

5. Infuse fun into the office culture upon return to work

Remember, this is a full reintroduction into the workplace for most, and the more fun it is, the more likely your employees will want to return to in-person working. Organize team-building activities, schedule socials or catch-ups for teams and individuals, and never forget to think of those small surprise and delight moments that can make all the difference. Whether it's Friday morning yoga, a coffee on the company, or wine and cheese on a Wednesday afternoon – those spontaneous moments will help show employees you care. And consider asking your employees what they would like to do so everyone is on board!Coming back to the office doesn’t have to be a drag — show appreciation for your team, encourage socialization in person, and plan fun events so people feel welcome and empowered!
