Have you always wanted to be in HR? Tell us a bit about your career journey to land where you are today.

No, I needed some life experience, some time to get to know myself before committing to a career direction. I spent some time in sales, then recruiting, followed by an operations support role in HR. I knew early on in HR it was where I wanted to invest and expand my career aspirations because of the nature of the work and the relationships that came with the role, it has always been as challenging as it is fulfilling.

After 10 years in HR, I wanted to participate at a more strategic level and pursued a MBA degree which I felt would accelerate my ability to do so. That achievement was an extremely rewarding undertaking, both personally and professionally, and one that continues to give back every day. It was one of the best decisions and investments I have made in myself and my career.

2. HR specialties/areas of focus/passions?

I am a builder at heart, so any opportunity to create something from nothing or build upon something that is already in place is very rewarding for me. Strategic HR and organizational design/behaviour are my areas of passion. Areas of focus for me are people analytics and employer branding.

3. Career mentor/role model? Who and why.

There are so many people who have inspired me, influencing me to be who I am today, a few that stand out include a former manager, who saw something in me that I had not yet seen myself, and very early on set me on a course and journey of self exploration and continuous development.

Another is a peer and longtime friend who is generous with his time, wisdom and knowledge of many things, not just HR, Marc Lavoie.

4. Looking ahead, what does the future of the HR function look like to you? How will workplaces shift and change?

The pandemic accelerated what the future of HR was shaping up to be, and brought it to the present. The disruption of all things we know are in flux, and the opportunity ahead of us now is to do it differently.

I think an important workplace shift is breaking away from the status quo and reimaging and reinventing something different from what we have had in the past, which will be a real competitive advantage. Breaking away from norms and redefining the norm is an exciting shift and change already underway.

5. The impact you hope to have on client workplaces?

I hope to help bring out the best in our clients and their teams, coaching and supporting them to lean into uncomfortable situations/conversations because it is where some of the greatest impact can be realized.

6. Words to live by? (Could be a motto, HR mantra, favourite quote etc.)

If you don’t have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?

7. Your go-to, mid-week pick-me-up?

Being outdoors and being active. Great company is always another great pick-me-up.
