Signs and Symptoms of Employee Burnout, and How Managers Can Help

Published:October 24, 2023

Employee burnout is a pervasive issue in today’s fast-paced and demanding work environments. It not only affects the individual’s well-being, but also has a significant impact on productivity and company morale. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of burnout, and providing appropriate support, is crucial for managers to maintain a healthy and engaged workforce. Here, we explore burnout symptoms and discuss how leaders can help their teams.

Understanding Employee Burnout

Employee burnout is a state of chronic physical and emotional exhaustion. According to the Mayo Clinic, signs and symptoms of burnout can be accompanied by feelings of cynicism, detachment, lack of accomplishment and irritability. This causes a decrease in productivity for the employee, and takes a financial toll on the business as reported by the Harvard Business Review. The condition is typically caused by: prolonged exposure to high levels of stress, excessive workload, lack of control over one’s work or schedule, or a toxic work environment. Employee burnout can manifest in various ways, impacting an individual’s professional and personal life.

Signs and Symptoms of Burnout

Here are examples of signs and symptoms of employee burnout that leaders need to be aware of:

  • Persistent Fatigue - Employees experiencing burnout symptoms often report extreme fatigue and constant feelings of tiredness, even after adequate rest. This can manifest as both physical and mental exhaustion.
  • Decreased Productivity - Employee burnout leads to a decline in productivity, lack of motivation and inability to meet deadlines. Employees may struggle to concentrate, make decisions or complete tasks effectively.
  • Emotional Detachment - This condition can cause individuals to detach emotionally from their work, colleagues and responsibilities. They may become more cynical, pessimistic or disengaged.
  • Reduced Motivation - As Gallup reports, when dealing with burnout symptoms, employees are using most of their energy and mental focus on daily survival, not developing for the future. A noticeable decline in enthusiasm and motivation toward work tasks or projects is a clear sign of burnout, as well as a lack of purpose.
  • Increased Absenteeism - Burnout often results in more frequent absences from work due to physical or mental health issues, as well as a desire to avoid the work environment causing the symptoms.
  • Physical Symptoms - Chronic stress from employee burnout can manifest in physical symptoms such as headaches, muscle tension, gastrointestinal issues and a weakened immune system.

Now that we know what employee burnout looks like, how can your organization help employees experiencing burnout?

How Leaders Can Help Alleviate Burnout

Leaders are integral to cultivating a healthy and engaged work environment, and to the company’s bottom line as we outlined in our recent blog. So what can your business leaders do to help with employee burnout?

  • Open Communication: Encourage dialogue about workload, expectations and individual capacities. Actively listen to employees’ concerns and be receptive to feedback.
  • Set Expectations: Ensure that employee workload and deadlines are achievable and reasonable. Avoid overburdening employees with excessive tasks that can lead to signs and symptoms of burnout.
  • Work Life Balance: Encourage employees to take breaks, use vacation time and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Respect their time outside of work hours.
  • Career Progression Planning: One of the biggest ways leaders can engage with their employees and prevent burnout is to include them in career progression planning. As we recently shared, this process includes performance management, productive feedback, communication and opportunities for learning on both sides.
